Organizational Summary

The3PointFoundation seeks to close the opportunity and achievement gap caused by socioeconomic inequity for underserved, low-income Boston middle school and high school youth by providing a variety of free programs during the school year and summer that develop the skills that lead to success in education, employment, and life and by supporting the journey to post-secondary education.  Our vision is that all of Boston’s youth have an equal opportunity to achieve in school. Our five goals include: strengthening 21st century skills, fostering social and emotional growth, cultivating a growth mindset, developing fitness and wellness, and promoting service to others. 

Position Summary 

By being both an assistant classroom instructor and basketball coach, you have a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the life of the youth we serve. In the classroom, you will inspire and teach our youth to think critically, problem solve, improve communication, teach 21st-century collaboration skills, and to help our youth present their own ideas using our project-based learning curriculum. On the basketball court, we implement a developmental basketball program for students in middle school and coaches are expected to emphasize the life lessons of the sport of basketball in addition to teaching basketball skills.  Our goals are five-fold: 21st-century skill development, growth mindset, health and wellness, service to others, and fostering social-emotional learning.  

Qualifications

  1. Prepare for and deliver lessons, assignments, and enrichment activities in conjunction with the lead classroom instructor.
  2. Differentiate instruction so that all students can successfully complete the academic work.
  3. Establish a productive learning environment and classroom culture in which all students are respected as well as materials and resources.
  4. Understand and implement culturally and linguistically sustaining practices.
  5. Maintain timely student attendance and progress records in collaboration with the lead classroom instructor, Director of Academics, and Program Director.
  6. Work with other program staff to ensure all outcome goals are on track, including academic and social-emotional skill development outcomes.
  7. Responsible for attending meetings as requested and reporting on classroom and student matters including progress on the curriculum and any concerns with staff, youth, and/or university students.
  8. Have a desire to work with students. Enthusiasm, patience, good organizational skills, maturity, dependability, be responsible and collaborate and be respectful of others.
  9. Be at least 18 years of age.
  10. Significant experience playing on and/or coaching a basketball team.
  11. Classroom experience working with youth.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understand the fundamentals of basketball
  • Have the ability to motivate students to reach their full potential
  • Demonstrated competency working with families of different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree, or equivalent lived experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent judgment, time management, and organizational skills
  • Ability to take initiative, and work independently and collaboratively as needed
  • Ability to give and receive direct and constructive feedback
  • Passion for working with young people
  • Proficiency with online systems: Google Workspace, Databases, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car
  • Occasional evening and weekend commitments may be required
  • Available for additional weekend hours for Saturday or Sunday basketball league


Schedule

  • Position to begin September 2024
  • Time is spent between classrooms, hybrid workspace in Roslindale and gyms
  • 4-15 hours in the program a week, there is a possibility of full time, please inquire if interested
  • Hours consist some time between 1-6 pm M-F, weekday mornings if full-time as well as Saturday and/or Sunday mornings 8-16 weeks a year.

This is a part-time position with a pay range of $20-30 an hour.  Please inquire if you are interested in full-time.

  • 5 sick/personal days/year
  • 16 paid holidays/year if scheduled to work
