Description

The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., with proven records of triggering and affecting systemic change to protect the Earth’s environment. For more than three decades, EIA has established unique methods to drive change – including pioneering the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crimes. These crimes include illegal trade in endangered wildlife, illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, human rights, and environmental violations in the extractives sector, and the trade in both climate-damaging and ozone layer-depleting gasses.

Position Description:

EIA-US is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Finance Manager to join our dynamic Operations Department and work with a passionate team dedicated to making a significant impact. This key role will support our programs and mission by managing financial processes and contributing to strategic financial planning and management.  

The position will entail a wide range of functions including to:

  • Oversee daily finance and accounting functions, ensuring compliance with standard accounting principles and organizational policies. 
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, various reconciliations, monthly allocations, credit card reconciliations, and overall monthly financial closing tasks and processes.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, budget vs. actual reports, and account variance analysis. 
  • Ensure that month-end and year-end financial processes are completed efficiently.
  • Collaborate closely with the grants team to review and reconcile financial reports from subgrantees and ensure adherence to the funder’s requirements. Support compliance and monitoring of contracts and agreements.
  • Manage and oversee financial compliance for federally funded projects to ensure all financial management practices align with federal requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of financial records and information in accordance with policies, procedures, and established internal controls.
  • Manage the annual audit preparation and compliance with tax filings, including the annual 990 form and 1099s.
  • Assist in the preparation of organizational budgets, funder reporting, and other financial reports, as needed.
  • Assist with HR functions including payroll processing.
  • Perform other financial and administrative duties as needed to support the efficient operations of the Organization. 
  • Work directly under the CFO and support the organization’s strategic financial planning. Collaborate with other departments to enhance financial practices and processes across the organization.

Essential Expertise and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, preferably working in the nonprofit sector.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Expert knowledge of QuickBooks and Excel.
  • Strong entrepreneurial skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively report financial information to non-financial stakeholders and work collaboratively across departments.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative and cooperative approach to work.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, be very organized, and handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial regulations and compliance.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to identify issues quickly and develop effective solutions.
  • High-level of accuracy and attention to detail in handling financial data, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with various regulations and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize disparate information and multiple activities and anticipate, identify, and solve problems.
  • Experience with managing federal funding.

Desirable Skills

  • CPA license or advanced degree/certification.
  • Intermediate to professional language fluency in Spanish and French.

This is a full-time position with an estimated starting salary range between $75,000 and $83,000, commensurate with experience.
