Executive Director, American Discovery Trail Society

The American Discovery Trail Society seeks an executive director with a keen interest in hiking, trails, and the outdoors to lead a national, volunteer-based, membership organization dedicated to developing a nonmotorized coast-to-coast trail. To date, the organization has relied on a single, part-time administrator, but we now seek a leader capable of increasing our budget to take the organization to a new level.

The primary task of the successful candidate will be to expand annual fundraising by developing new sources of revenue from programs, foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government sources.

Other responsibilities include: expand programs; develop partnerships to increase community awareness of the trail; network with other trails organizations; provide information to the public; publicize the trail via social media and other means; and work with volunteers including an active board of directors and state coordinators who perform many of the organization’s functions.

The successful candidate could work from home anywhere in the U.S. The Society foresees flexibility in its staffing, depending on the interests and abilities of candidates. One option could be a part-time director who would work with a part-time administrator until finances allow hiring more staff. Another option is a full-time position that will require approximately half-time to administer the needs of a 1000-member organization, including maintaining the membership database; processing memberships, donations, and merchandise orders; paying bills; printing and mailing newsletters; and more. Compensation will be tailored to the situation.
