Back from the Brink (BftB): Bringing Communities Together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, a U.S. based grassroots coalition - www.preventnuclearwar.org - working to prevent nuclear war and abolish nuclear weapons, seeks an experienced communications consultant to serve as project coordinator and lead writer for a two-year, grant-funded public education initiative.

The overall goal of the project is to further the public’s understanding of the widespread and significant risks and consequences posed by nuclear weapons and U.S. nuclear weapons policies and spending, with the intent of helping to create the conditions within the United States for increased dialogue, civic participation and activism on this pressing issue and, as a result, growing the public’s support for policy changes that will reduce nuclear risks and prevent nuclear war.

The project seeks to reach and engage a diverse, multigenerational audience of civic-minded, concerned individuals as well as cultural, political and intellectual leaders and influencers, throughout the United States. The project will involve developing, managing and distributing a range of print and digital content, including videos, web/social media graphics, animations, web content, and fact sheets/explainers, as well as the possible creation of both a new podcast and blog series. The communications consultant will help conceive, write, produce and deliver print & digital content The communications consultant will be hired as a non-benefited consultant working remotely and be an integral member and lead facilitator/convener of a 4-5 person BftB project team.


Primary Responsibilities/Scope of Services

● Serve as the overall project coordinator – including facilitating project team meetings and communications; working directly, regularly and collaboratively with the project’s lead graphic designer/content creator and the campaign’s social/earned media consultant; coordinating production schedules; liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including an advisory committee of representatives of partner and allied organizations and communications staff from partner and endorsing organizations.

● Develop and maintain strategic planning, production calendars/schedules, project reporting and budget documents, tracking all project expenses, deliverables, outcomes, etc.

● Serve as the lead writer for all digital, web and print content including videos, web/social media graphics, animations, web content, and fact sheets/explainers.

● Conceive, research and present product/content ideas, strategic guidance and marketing and distribution recommendations as part of the project team.

● Lead in the planning and coordination/management of public education events, including online webinars and possibly in-person events in select regions.


About You -- Skills/Competencies/Qualifications

● 3-5 years of professional writing and creative experience in a marketing, public relations, journalism or non-profit/policy institution, including some combination of writing press releases, video scripts, blogs, podcasts, issue briefs/backgrounders, social media posts, and web content/pages.

● Must be an excellent, creative, detailed-oriented writer, editor, proofreader, and researcher.

● Proven track record and professional experience as a project leader/manager with excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with different personalities in a remote environment. Some previous supervisory experience is preferred but not required.

● An independent self-starter and strategic thinker, who is able to work with limited direction, multi-task and meet tight deadlines.


Compensation, Work Hours, and Supervision

The Project Coordinator/Writer consultant is a non-benefited, remote, independent contractor (non-staff) position that pays a range of $50-65/hour (plus approved expenses) not to exceed $8000/month with monthly pay periods to be paid by Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles, the campaign’s fiscal agent, at the end of each month. The consulting fee will be negotiated and determined based on the applicant's skill set, years of experience, available hours, location and other criteria. The consultant is solely responsible for paying all relevant business/self-employment and state and federal income taxes.

Work schedule and hours can be flexible but should occur Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am and 8pm ET with a basic weekly schedule determined at the beginning of the contract. The consultant will work directly with the campaign’s senior consultant/strategic advisor with weekly check-in’s and written summaries of work performed.


About Back from the Brink

Founded in 2017, Back from the Brink: Bringing Communities Together to Abolish Nuclear Weapons is a US-based grassroots coalition of individuals, organizations and elected officials working to abolish nuclear weapons and securing a set of common sense U.S. nuclear weapons policies that will make the world safer, healthier, and more just. Rooted in the belief that “nuclear weapons are a local issue” BftB’s core focus is local, community-based organizing, giving people a voice and a way to join with others in their communities to take action.

Coalition partners include Union of Concerned Scientists, Physicians for Social Responsibility, United Church of Christ, Peace Action, Soka Gakkai International - USA and Pax Christi - USA. BftB’s policy platform has been endorsed by 480+ organizations, 430 local and state elected officials and 44 members of Congress. BftB resolutions have been passed by 85 cities, towns, counties and state legislative bodies throughout the United States. Physicians for Social Responsibility - Los Angeles (PSR-LA) serves as BftB’s fiscal agent and the consultant would be an independent contractor to PSR-LA.
