The Strategy Manager performs a wide range of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Professional Development
▪ Enrich MCAN’s professional development strategy focused on serving college access practitioners
including but not limited to school counselors, K12 staff, and nonprofit professionals.
▪ Serve as the primary lead of the School Counselor Fellows program and work in partnership with
the Center for Equity and Postsecondary Attainment at San Diego State University to plan, facilitate
and support implementation.
▪ Support the planning and hosting meetings, convenings, trainings, and other special events within the High School Innovation strategy.
▪ Create and present professional development incorporating principles of adult learning
▪ Lead the strategy, design and implementation of the College and Career Planning course.
▪ Develop supplemental guides, material, and resources for college access practitioners.
Grant Management
▪ Facilitate the high school innovation grantmaking strategy including providing ongoing coaching
and technical assistance to grantees.
▪ Coordinate and manage the review process for all departmental grantmaking.
▪ Serve as the primary manager of the online grants-management system for the High School
Innovation strategy.
▪ Support facilitation and manage the logistics and technical support for high school grant strategy.
▪ Serve on MCAN’s grant review team. Independently read and score various grant applications and
participate in team meetings to review and determine the status of grant proposals.
General Department Supports
▪ Support the organization in reaching its equity and inclusion goals. Assist in the audit of existing
programs and design of new programs to ensure they are designed to close gaps, specifically among low-income students, first-generation college- going students, and students of color.
▪ Professionally and accurately communicate, in written and oral form, with critical MCAN constituents such as K12 professionals, higher education staff, LCAN coordinators, partner organizations, and state agencies.
▪ Compile and analyze data to improve effectiveness of MCAN’s strategies.
▪ Serve as cross functional department liaison to communicate resources, priorities and strategies and request feedback to enhance department supports.
▪ Provide mentorship and guidance to the Strategy Assistant for High School Innovation on their key
projects.
EDUCATION, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Required Skills/Abilities:
▪ Have an ability to collaborate across departments on multiple projects and timelines, and work
independently with minimal management to effectively perform duties in a fast-paced environment.
▪ Have ability to think critically to solve problems, pay attention to detail, and follow through on tasks assigned through completion.
▪ Possess the ability to take big picture ideas into strategy implementation.
▪ Able to use adult learner framework to design effective professional development and coaching.
▪ Savvy with data processes and systems.
▪ Work efficiently and adhere to established deadlines.
▪ Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
▪ Have a passion for working in the nonprofit and education sector, especially for postsecondary
attainment.
▪ Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
▪ Ability for regular in-state and national travel and overnight stays.
Education and Experience:
▪ Bachelor degree in education, public administration, or other related fields. Master preferred.
▪ Five to eight years of experience working in education preferably high school or district leadership.
Physical Requirements:
◾ Prolonged periods of working on a computer either in a sitting or standing position.
◾ Must be able to lift 20 pounds at times.
◾ Must be able to access and navigate organization’s office facilities.
