Position Summary

The Director of Programs and Operations (DPO) has strategic and operational responsibility for staff, programs, expansion, and execution of ABC’s mission. The DPO reports to the Executive Director and manages a small team. This position is part of the leadership team and is expected to work collaboratively with all director-level positions.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Enable ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems; Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals
  • Engage and energize ABC staff, volunteers, board members, event committees, partner organizations, and funders to define and fulfill their contributions to the mission; instill a strong sense of partnership and cohesion across the organization; use open channels of communication to reinforce a culture of excellence toward achieving the highest standards of practice focused on movement building and advocacy that influences policy
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong board; serve as ex-officio of each committee; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing local and regional operations as well as for national opportunities
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain a high-performance team of staff and volunteers
  • Build and maintain effective systems to track scaling progress, implement clear metrics of success, and regularly evaluate program components to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other stakeholders

Development / Communications

  • Expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing and future program operations
  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations— to create a stronger brand
  • Utilize external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities

Programmatic

  • Determine and oversee the implementation of programmatic activities
  • Solidify ABC’s reputation as a leader of Southern California’s movement to advance social, economic, and racial equity and justice for the Latino/a community and the Los Angeles region through power-building and policy advocacy
  • Work with staff to develop a comprehensive plan to strengthen, continually refresh, and enrich ABC’s programmatic goals
  • Represent the organization on boards

Planning & New Business

  • Design and execute expansion plans
  • Build partnerships in new sectors, establishing relationships with funders, the political sphere, and community leaders
  • Serve as an articulate and persuasive spokesperson on behalf of the organization, establishing a local, statewide, and national presence while publishing and communicating program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for replication

Operations

  • With the Board of Directors, Executive Director, and Director of Finance, translate ABC’s organizational strategy into annual operating plans covering finance, compliance, governance, policies & procedures, and HR/administrative needs
  • Lead and motivate direct reports to advance employee engagement and develop a high-performing managerial team
  • Oversee all operations and business activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission
  • Enforce adherence to HR practices, legal guidelines, and in-house policies to maintain the company’s legal compliance and business ethics
  • Review non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements

Qualifications

  • All staff members must exemplify the values of ABC as they are presented.
  • A commitment to the mission and goals of ABC and a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of the Latino community
  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, ideally in a Latino/a community support field or nonprofit management-related fields
  • Experience: Must have a minimum of 10 years of increasingly responsible full-time experience in nonprofits, with a minimum of 5 years in leadership positions
  • Content Knowledge: Must have a proven ability to analyze mission-related efforts and expert knowledge of Los Angeles and California public policy issues
  • Community Knowledge: Deep experience working within the Los Angeles region, city, school districts, public officials and agencies, and key community partners with a deep understanding and experience working with the Latino community
  • Leadership Skills: Excellent leadership skills with a proven track record in leading broad-based efforts with diverse stakeholders and partners and contributing positively to the work culture by being solutions-oriented and a team player 
  • Collaboration: Able to work independently and lead a team environment to attain collaborative efforts to accomplish collective goals and objectives. Must maintain positive working relationships with organizational leadership and staff to meet collective goals
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent project management and multi-tasking skills, e.g., attention to detail, ability to create and monitor project budgets and timelines, proper documentation of work and record keeping, and the ability to prioritize work effectively
  • Communications Skills: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Proven ability to establish and maintain high-priority relationships. Preference for bilingual candidates (Spanish & English) 

Workload and Physical Demands

This position requires weekend and evening work as well as travel. The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this position successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions. While performing this position, the employee is regularly required to operate a personal computer for up to 8 hours a day and to talk on the telephone or webcam for multiple hours per day. The employee is occasionally required to support outdoor events and to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Because this position requires direct interactions with others, the employee must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, although reasonable accommodation requests will be considered.
