International Arts and Artists (IA&A) is a non-profit arts and cultural diplomacy organization

dedicated to promoting cross-cultural understanding and exposure to the arts internationally.

IA&A fulfills its mission by providing programs and services to artists, arts institutions, cultural

organizations, and the public. IA&A's programs include traveling exhibitions, cultural exchanges,

educational workshops, and professional development opportunities.


Position Summary: The Senior Curator of Traveling Exhibitions at International Arts and Artists

(IA&A) plays a pivotal role in advancing the organization’s mission of promoting cross-cultural

understanding and exposure to the arts internationally. This dynamic role involves leading

IA&A’s exhibition development team, cultivating new partnerships with artists, curators,

academics, and cultural heritage institutions globally, and serving as a curator or co-curator for a

diverse roster of traveling exhibitions and special projects. The Curator will oversee the creation

of comprehensive exhibition interpretative content, manage project portfolios and budgets, and

engage in extensive research to enhance exhibition content and scope. This position demands

a seasoned professional with exceptional research, editorial, and writing skills, capable of

developing multiple projects simultaneously while fostering diversity and inclusion within all

exhibitions and developing projects.


This position reports directly to the Director of Traveling Exhibitions.


Responsibilities:

  • Assist in leading IA&A’s exhibition development team, generating new partnerships with artists, curators, academics, and cultural heritage institutions globally.
  • Serve as curator or co-curator for current traveling exhibitions, proposed exhibitions, and pop-up projects.
  • Select and oversee Guest Curators.
  • Research, write, and oversee the creation of exhibition interpretative content, publications, labels, and accompanying educational and marketing materials.
  • Identify thematic gaps in the traveling exhibition marketplace, assess the viability of potential exhibitions, and determine projects with the greatest marketability and social value.
  • Assist in managing the portfolio of contracts, developing projects, and budgets for IA&A’s Traveling Exhibition Service.
  • Market and negotiate new exhibition contracts with external partners in the US and internationally.
  • Work directly with artists, collectors, and curators to create exhibition content that promotes diversity and inclusion.
  • Lead the research and development of cultural diplomacy and academic grant proposals for domestic and international projects and supplemental exhibition funding.
  • Conduct extensive research on national and international artists, public and private collections, archival materials, and artworks/objects to enhance the scope of new and existing exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with external curators to refine exhibition checklists in line with their curatorial vision and IA&A objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with museums, collectors, and artists globally.
  • Aid in the content development of IA&A’s social media platforms and website.
  • Maintain electronic files and databases concerning exhibition project development, collections, and stakeholder information (such as Monday.com).


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in art history, history, museum studies, or a related field
  • At least five years of experience directly related to the specified duties and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of museum and traveling exhibition marketplace, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of exhibition development and organization, including national and international collaborations.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively lead a team of arts professionals.
  • Highly developed research, editorial, and writing skills.
  • Established professional relationships with artists, curators, galleries, and arts institutions.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent collaborative, interpersonal, and management skills.
  • Proven ability to secure grant funding and other support for IA&A’s projects.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and budget management skills.
  • Ability to think strategically and devise practical solutions to complex issues.


Working Conditions: International Arts and Artists is located in the historic DuPont Circle

neighborhood in Washington, DC. This position can be in-person or hybrid at our Washington

DC office. IA&A staff adhere to a work schedule keeping business hours during the regular

work week and adhering to the Employee Manual. The Museum Curator may be required to

work outside of regular hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. IA&A maintains an

open office workspace with low to moderate noise.


Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly

required to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and

telephone. Specific vision abilities required include close vision due to computer work.
