Overview

We are seeking a skilled Finance Director to oversee all financial aspects of our retreat center. The ideal candidate will be responsible for financial planning, analysis, and reporting to guide Karmê Chöling’s financial decisions. The Finance Director will oversee a bookkeeper and report to the Executive Directors.

Responsibilities

Oversee financial operations and reporting:

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, bill payments, and processing of payroll and donations
  • Maintain banking relationships and manage asset liquidity, including monitoring cash balances and evaluating debt and financing options
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements

Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements:

  • Maintain and document financial procedures
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting and tax filing requirements
  • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage

Institute a budget and forecast process:

  • Develop, track, and adjust annual budgets with appropriate departments
  • Calculate budget variances and resolve issues

Conduct financial analyses to support operational decision-making:

  • Conduct cost analyses and make recommendations for cost reduction and improved efficiencies
  • Evaluate capital investment projects
  • Evaluate asset allocation and potential dispositions
  • Conduct analyses related to donors and donations
  • Conduct analyses related to program profitability

Develop and implement financial strategies:

  • Assist the Executive Directors and Shambhala Board in formulating Karmê Chöling’s future direction and supporting tactical initiatives
  • Develop and direct the implementation of strategic business plans

Oversee the implementation and maintenance of financial software systems, including a transition in software from Sage to Quickbooks

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; MBA preferred
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Sage or other accounting software
  • Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and nonprofit accounting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in cash flow analysis, financial accounting and report writing, and compliance management
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with an executive team
  • Strong creative skills to develop new and innovative solutions
