Description

The ACLU of Georgia seeks a temporary regional organizer for its Voter Access Project (VAP), who will help expand our work in the southern and coastal region of the state. The Voter Access Project seeks to ensure that all Georgians have easy and equal access to the ballot. The project’s main objectives include developing volunteers across the state to monitor Board of Election meetings, expanding access to advance voting, recruiting election workers to fill needed gaps, and preventing local efforts to restrict voter access, such as baseless voter challenges.

Right now, Georgia is ground zero for the well-funded and organized movement to undermine our democracy. In these crucial months before the election, we seek to expand our network of volunteers, local partnerships and capacity for rapid response to ensure access to the ballot for all.

This position is a temporary full-time position (now through end of December), with the possibility of extension. We are also open to candidates who can only commit part-time. The ideal candidate will be based in the coastal or southern region of Georgia. We are especially looking for candidates in the Albany, Macon, and Savannah areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·       Identify and recruit local community members to serve as volunteers in our Local Election Advocates and Defenders (LEAD) program (known as LEADers)

·       Train new and existing LEADers and other local volunteers to be effective voting rights advocates, such as developing talking points and action plans when addressing key issues with their Board of Elections

·       Support the development and execution of rapid response plans to prevent voting rights restrictions (such as voter challenges, poll closures, etc); identify opportunities to advance pro-active reforms that expand voter access

·       Build relationships with community partners; cultivate relationships with Board of election members, election officials and election department staff

·       Provide back-end operational support (i.e. processing and collating reports and processing reimbursements to volunteers).

·       Recruit Georgians to sign up as poll workers to fill identified gaps in target counties.

·       Support other VAP programming such as around campus early voting as directed by VAP Associate Director.

·       Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

·       At least one year of relevant community organizing/engagement experience.

·       Familiarity with core voter rights issues and landscape, preferred.

·       Existing community relationships and connections in target counties, preferred.

·       Experience recruiting, training, and motivating volunteers.

·       Comfort with digital tools and web-based communication to engage volunteers and engage in organizing campaigns and rapid response.

·       Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

·       Comfort with multiple technology applications.

·       A demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights, and an understanding of and appreciation for the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals.

·       A valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and willingness to travel around the state.

·       Ability to work irregular hours, and to attend evening and weekend meetings.

·       Fluency in Spanish preferred.

·       Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.

·       Based in Southern or coastal Georgia preferred
