Political Canvasser

UNITE HERE (UNITE HERE!) is hiring dedicated individuals into paid positions for our full-time Organizer Training and Canvassing Program. We are seeking union members, students, and activists from across the social justice movement who are committed to building the labor movement and working-class political power, defeating Donald Trump in November, and stopping the spread of fascism in the United States.

UNITE HERE ran the largest door-knocking canvass operation in the U.S. in 2020 helping deliver Joe Biden to the White House and then securing a majority in the US Senate, knocking 1.5 million doors in the Georgia runoff to send Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to Congress. We are running our largest political program ever this year and expanding into North Carolina for the first time. Our strategy is simple: we engage people on the doors through deep canvassing and win, one conversation at a time.

The 2024 Organizer Training and Canvassing Program will include:

• Daily door-to-door canvassing in working-class communities of color to get out the vote for pro-worker candidates.
• Training on labor history, labor law, and the process for organizing workers.
• Presentations by movement leaders who have led workplace organizing campaigns, as well as other campaigns for social justice, with Q and A and discussion breakout groups, as well as racial, gender and economic justice workshops.
• Individual leadership and skill development plans for each participant with 1-1 mentorship throughout.
• Regular role play training on skills including storytelling, agitation around issues, inspiring folks to act, effective follow up, use of mobile technology and data, and communications.
• Street actions, including a March to the Polls.

We are seeking people who are willing to work long hours and have ability to work a flexible schedule.

UNITE HERE Charlotte is the hospitality workers union in the Charlotte metropolitan area. We are 1,800+ food service and airport workers in the Charlotte region who have won a union in our workplaces, and the thousands of not yet organized hospitality workers in our city and region. Our fight for justice for hospitality workers is a fight for fair treatment and dignity both in and outside of the workplace; we need good union jobs, respect at work and in our neighborhoods, quality education for our children, an end to mass incarceration, racial and gender justice, immigrant rights and a safe and healthy environment for our families.

Start date: August 1 (will be additional start date in Sept.)

Salary: Starting rate for canvassers is $22.14/hour.

Schedule: Tuesdays through Sundays (half day Sundays, Mondays off).

Location: Work is in person and site based in and around Charlotte, NC.
