The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s mission is to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. The Animal Legal Defense Fund accomplishes this mission by filing high-impact lawsuits to protect animals from harm, providing free legal assistance and training to prosecutors to assure that animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes, supporting tough animal protection legislation and fighting legislation harmful to animals, and providing resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance the emerging field of animal law. 


Role Description:  

The Compensation and Benefits Administrator will play an integral role in administering all employee benefit programs, including the annual open enrollment process, partnering with vendors, training and assisting employees throughout the year. This position will also be responsible for administering ALDF’s HRIS system (Paylocity), which may include troubleshooting, customization, development, maintenance and upgrades. The Administrator will also ensure all leave programs are compliant with both applicable laws and ALDF policies. This role will work closely with the finance department to ensure the proper processing of payroll and related programs. Finally, the Administrator will provide additional support to the human resource function as needed, including record-keeping, file maintenance and HRIS entry. 

How You Will Make a Difference:

Benefit Administration

  • Manages the benefits administration process including determining eligibility, managing the open enrollment process, and maintaining vendor relationships. 
  • Responsible for ensuring the accuracy of information between ALDF’s HRIS and appropriate benefits carriers. 
  • Effectively interprets federal and state leave laws to ensure all benefits and leave programs remain compliant. 
  • Researches and analyzes leave and benefit trends to make recommendations balancing organizational needs, fiscal responsibility, and best practices, particularly during open enrollment. 
  • Performs benefits invoice reconciliation including ensuring that that new hires, changes, and departures are captured and working with vendors to resolve discrepancies.   
  • Advises management on resolving benefits issues. 
  • Performs quality checks of HRIS and benefits-related data. 

Compensation/Payroll

  • Serves as point of contact between employees, managers, and payroll regarding timekeeping issues such as ensuring timecards are approved in a timely fashion, addressing missed punches, and ensuring time-off accruals, leaves of absence, and holidays are properly administered. 
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state compensation laws by conducting regular audits and training employees and managers as appropriate.  
  • Assists with compensation-related duties including salary benchmarking and structures as requested. 
  • Assists with ensuring that ALDF’s compensation and benefits are competitive. 
  • Ensures data accuracy of HRIS system and works closely with HRIS vendor Paylocity to troubleshoot issues and perform system enhancements and modifications. 

 Employee Support

  • Performs new hire orientations and conducts all open enrollment activities. 
  • Conducts training for all employees on ALDF’s leave and benefits programs during open enrollment and as needed. 
  • Processes and administers all leave-of-absence requests including parental, disability and sabbatical. Develops and oversees leave tracking process. Works with employees to ensure understanding of leave policies and processes. 
  • Drives utilization of ALDF’s employee assistance program and other wellness resources, including monitoring usage and costs of existing programs and identifying and anticipating wellness program needs. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

We Are Looking for Candidates With: 

  • A bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field is preferred. In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 5 years of relevant HR experience may be considered equivalent. 
  • 3+ years in employee benefits administration. 
  • Knowledge of US federal and state employment laws and regulations, knowledge of California employment law is a plus. 
  • Experience in a multi-state environment, strongly preferred. 
  • Experience building out an HRIS system, Paylocity experience is preferred. 
  • Experience with benefits-related data and systems management. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills. 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others in a team-oriented work environment. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues. 
  • Dedication to a high level of accuracy. 
  • Commitment to working with integrity.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft 365. 
  • HR Certification such as SHRM-CP or PHR is preferred. 
  • Experience in nonprofit or legal sector preferred. 
  • Definite interest in and knowledge of animal protection issues and commitment to the mission of ALDF.
  • The ability to travel periodically for staff meetings and retreats (estimated 1-3 trips annually).

  • Starting annual salary of $76,161 for most geographic locations. 
  • For candidates located within 25 miles of Washington D.C, Cotati, CA, and Los Angeles, starting pay is $80,169. 
  • For candidates located within 25 miles of New York City and San Francisco, starting pay is $84,177. 

To ensure salary equity, we do not negotiate salary outside of the published starting rate. Rate is determined by role using set geographical factors.
