  • Workforce Development - IREC leads initiatives to build a diverse and qualified clean energy workforce while ensuring that clean energy workers have access to family-sustaining careers.
  • Local Initiatives - IREC supports communities to develop policies and promote best practices that accelerate the equitable deployment of clean energy.
  • State Regulatory Engagement - IREC represents the public interest in state regulatory proceedings and develops and disseminates best practices to ensure that distributed energy resources (DERs) can be equitably and efficiently integrated on the electric grid.

About the Position

  • Type: Full-time; exempt
  • Salary: $55,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications
  • Location: Puerto Rico; hybrid home office and office space in San Juan
  • Reports to: Program Director for Puerto Rico

The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) seeks a passionate leader to advance change at the intersection of clean energy, equity, and inclusion. The position will support IREC’s Local Initiatives Program with a specific focus on accelerating clean energy deployment and building energy resilience and equity in Puerto Rico

You will collaborate with communities and community-based organizations (CBOs), regulators, policymakers, academic institutions, energy cooperatives, financial institutions, energy companies, utility providers, and other stakeholders in Puerto Rico and across the U.S. to advance bold clean energy and energy resilience goals in Puerto Rico. You will work closely with the Puerto Rico Program Director and colleagues across IREC to:

  • Conduct community outreach to understand energy needs and goals
  • Carry out stakeholder engagement in communities around energy and resilience initiatives
  • Conduct research into Puerto Rican barriers to and opportunities for clean energy development and energy resilience
  • Collaborate with partners, including local and federal government, non-profits, industry, and financial institutions, to identify and remove financial barriers to renewable energy development
  • Assist in capacity building and providing technical assistance on clean energy and resilience best practices to diverse stakeholders in the energy ecosystem
  • In collaboration with industry associations and local government, develop and disseminate consumer protection information for residential and commercial energy customers
  • Support the development of solar and storage microgrid projects

IREC team members collaborate primarily in the virtual environment, leveraging remote meetings, project management, and other collaboration tools to stay connected and on task.  


Responsibilities

  • Implement renewable energy and energy efficiency programs according to scope, schedule, and budget
  • Support project management tasks such as project planning, grant reporting, budget oversight, etc.
  • Lead community outreach efforts to ensure energy solutions align with community objectives
  • Develop outreach and educational materials and effectively communicate program benefits to stakeholders
  • Conduct research, surveys, and analysis in support of program goals
  • Research new technologies and trends in renewable energy and energy efficiency 
  • Build and nurture relationships with energy stakeholders throughout Puerto Rico and the United States
  • Represent IREC at external meetings and conferences
  • Support programmatic fundraising activities and grant applications
  • Support internal initiatives to further strengthen IREC’s workplace culture and organizational impact
  • Frequent travel to communities around Puerto Rico to engage with communities of diverse backgrounds and needs


Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Qualities for This Role:

The successful candidate will bring the following qualities to our organization:

Required: 

  • Experience in community organizing in a non-profit, government, education, private business, or organized labor setting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English
  • Ability to establish measurable goals to demonstrate impact and inform adjustments to strategy and approach
  • Willingness to be flexible, adapt to new technologies, learn, and shift course as needs arise
  • Passionate about clean energy, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility

Preferred: 

  • Experience and networks in sectors of clean energy, environment/climate, solar energy, and/or related trades
  • A bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of relevant work experience, an associate’s degree and 4-5 years of relevant work experience, or a master’s degree and 1-2 years of relevant work experience; four additional years of work experience can be substituted for a bachelor’s degree
  • Educational background in environmental studies, economics, sociology, public policy, law, business, sustainability, or another related field
  • Research experience
  • Experience forming cross-sectoral partnerships
  • Experience with solar finance
  • Experience with community energy resilience
