Development & Events Director

The Legal Clinic (TLC), a Honolulu, Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit organization, is seeking candidates for a full-time development and events director position. TLC’s mission is to ensure justice for low-income immigrants and migrants in Hawaiʻi, through high-quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy. TLC was incorporated as an independent, secular 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2019, and is the Hawaiʻi affiliate of the national Immigration Law and Justice Network. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES  

The development & events director will help lead and support the continued growth of TLC through fundraising events and donor management efforts. The primary focus of this position will be to plan and coordinate fundraising and volunteer recognition events, solicit corporate sponsors, manage donor acknowledgments, and develop other communication tools and methods for donor engagement. A considerable amount of time is dedicated to planning for and implementing—with a volunteer planning committee—an annual spring benefit event “Stand Up for Immigrant Justice Pau Hana” in downtown Honolulu, which honors regional “Guardians of Immigrant Justice”. The person in this position will also support TLC’s executive director (ED) and board in their efforts to cultivate new individual donors and to develop personal relationships with a portfolio of existing supporters that result in renewed or increased support to the organization.  

The development & events director works closely with the ED and the board development committee to identify and implement an integrated strategy across fund development, communications, and volunteer engagement to ensure the organization has the resources it needs to fulfill its mission and grow to serve more clients. The person in this role also works to increase public awareness of the organization and of immigrant justice matters, telling the story of the organization and the clients we serve through e-communications, social media, an annual report, and other written materials. The development & events director reports to the ED and also works closely with a TLC engagement coordinator on donor data management, event planning, and communications efforts. TLC currently uses Bloomerang as its donor database (CRM). The development & events director, in conjunction with others, will fulfill the following duties:

Event Planning & Coordination - 50%

• Plan and coordinate donor stewardship events and annual TLC fundraising events, including managing an event planning committee, working with event chair/s, recruiting and managing event volunteers and contractor/s, overseeing an auction process, and helping the committee secure event sponsors. 
• Promote benefit event/s and ticket sales via social- and traditional media, and through existing networks. 
• Plan and coordinate 1-2 volunteer “mahalo” events a year. 
• Procure event-related supplies, venue, food, equipment, entertainment, decor, swag, awardee gifts or  certificates, photographers/videographers, and signage. 
• Ensure timely and detailed event documentation and follow-up to help improve TLC events year-to-year.

Fundraising Appeals & Communications - 30%

• Manage timely and appropriate donor and volunteer acknowledgments year-round, and ensure that donor database is accurate and up to date (with additional staff support).
• Plan and oversee implementation of fundraising campaigns and appeals via mail, email, and social media.
• Work with the ED and a coordinator to develop and oversee TLC’s donor related communications efforts, and to ensure regular e-newsletter communications, social media presence, and website messaging.
• Develop and produce an annual report, in close collaboration with the ED and other staff.
• This position may evolve to include supervision one or more staff positions in communications and/or fundraising.

Support TLC Leadership’s Donor Cultivation and Development Planning Efforts – 15%

• Engage board members in fundraising events and campaigns, and provide related training and materials.
• Support the ED and board members’ efforts to cultivate relationships with individual donors and to attract new prospective donors. 
• Work with the ED and the board development committee to create and track an annual fundraising plan. 
• Prepare and deliver bi-monthly development reports to the TLC board of directors. 

Other - 5%

• Attend community events as a representative of the organization.
• Participate in other staff activities, including team-building events, trainings, educational opportunities, etc. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

• Demonstrated experience in event planning and nonprofit fundraising, preferably in Hawai’i.
• Prior annual giving and individual donor relations experience (alternately, two years or more of client relations plus communications and marketing experience).
• Volunteer and staff management experience strongly desired.  

Knowledge:

• Familiarity with major non-profit funders and the donor community in Hawai’i.
• Some knowledge of issues affecting immigrant communities in Hawaii.
• Associate’s degree or higher. 

Skills:

• Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate clearly, persuasively, and succinctly.
• Clear commitment to the mission of TLC and the legal rights of immigrants.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work on deadlines and maintain accountability with others to manage multiple fundraising efforts.
• Meticulous attention to detail and ability to track many deadlines, activities, and relationships. 
• Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, customer relationship management (CRM) software, and social media platforms.
• Ability to work sensitively with numerous staff, volunteers, and clients having diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, political orientations and various faiths.

Compensation & Benefits: 

Salary range is $65,000-$90,000 (full-time, annual), depending on experience and qualifications.
