ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Commonpoint, headquartered in Queens, is a multifaceted community organization dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the quality of individual, family and communal life throughout the metro New York area, offering services to people of all ages, ability levels, stages of life and backgrounds. Commonpoint strives to meet the evolving needs of the community helping 80,000 members ranging from providing in-school and after-school programs, professional and career development, assistance with food insecurity, legal services, financial counseling, mental health services, senior classes, dementia care programs, and tax preparation assistance to name a few. Commonpoint has grown tremendously in the last five years and now has a budget over $80MM, a mission-driven staff of 3,000 and close to 80 sites in the five boroughs.


ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Within their holistic, strength-focused, and family-supported practice framework, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Bronx Community Services will report to the Chief Operating Officer (COO).  The AVP has primary responsibility for overseeing and operating the newly acquired Bronx location including program development, grant and contract acquisition, maintenance and operations, financial management, and compliance, in support of the goals and mission of Commonpoint. The Bronx location will be a microcosm of Commonpoint in that it will house many of the programs for which Commonpoint is known, including a swim program.


The successful candidate will join a dedicated and talented senior leadership and the Executive team to develop strategies that support growth, stability, and agency impact goals. Core responsibilities include:


Programmatic Excellence and Team Leadership

  • Drive programmatic excellence and growth, applying an entrepreneurial approach to manage each program as a business with unique opportunities for innovation and community impact.
  • Motivate team to set ambitious goals, take appropriate risks, and develop metrics to track and measure progress so that the organization can learn and improve over time.
  • Manage, recruit and retain a high-performing team in all areas including operations and programs, and closely collaborate with Commonpoint’s senior teams.
  • Build out programs to address the needs of the community, including fee-for-service programs.


Operational and Financial Management

  • Provide leadership and management of the Bronx location operations, responsible for the day-to-day management and security.
  • Understand physical plant, technical support systems and running the various businesses located in the Bronx. Visibility and skilled responsiveness to members is essential.
  • Develop and manage an operating budget of $3-4MM in partnership with leadership, the program team, and finance team.


Strategic Leadership and Community Engagement

  • Promote an all-encompassing and compelling vision that captures the energy of Commonpoint and a robust, engaged and involved community going forward.
  • Lead efforts directed toward the engagement of community among individuals, agencies, foundations, and other community stakeholders in the Bronx.
  • Identify funding opportunities to expand programming, understand the RFP process, and write proposals to secure funding.


ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

The ideal AVP will be forward-thinking, people-focused, and strategic about program management, community building, team development, and urban engagement. They will also be passionate about supporting the Bronx community.

Qualifications:

  • 8 + years of strategic, senior leadership and management experience in the nonprofit sector and/or equivalent business experience.
  • Experience managing teams, developing talent, and inspiring collaboration.
  • Experience developing and managing programs and scaling existing programs that serve a wide range of community needs and interests.
  • Operational and financial know-how with the skills and experience needed to run facilities.
  • Strong community relations and engagement skills, with the ability to foster relationships with community members, foundations, elected officials, and other key stakeholders.
  • Committed to excellence and a persistent pursuit of results with an exceptional work ethic, strong organizational skills and a can-do attitude. 
  • A data-driven approach with the ability to creatively problem-solve, make decisions, and implement changes quickly and soundly.

EDUCATION: BA/BS required; advanced degree a plus.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Salary range for this role is $105,000 - $145,000 commensurate with experience. Commonpoint provides a suite of competitive benefits including health insurance (including dental & vision), FSA, a 403(b) Plan and Pension Plan, Life Insurance, and a generous and flexible PTO system.


LOCATION & EXPECTATIONS: This position reports to offices located in the Bronx. Presence at other locations within NYC may be required, in addition to evening/weekend hours as needed.
