THE OPPORTUNITY

Uniting Partners (UP) for Women and Children is a drop in day center for unhoused women and their children and marginalized genders. UP provides comprehensive services: a safe space, shower, restroom, use of UP telephone, a mailing address, help obtaining vital documents, case management, and a place to connect with community resources and providers. The Shelter Manager is responsible for leading and supervising shelter staff and maintaining community

provider partnerships. This position ensures compassionate and efficient provision of services to clients, while supporting the agency’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily shelter service and guide staff in setting appropriate boundaries with clients.
  • Offer a welcoming face of warmth and hospitality to all clients, volunteers, partner organizations, donors, and staff.
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate case managers, peer support and clients support specialists (setting and meeting goals, evaluating performance).
  • Build relationships with local service providers like mental health support, job training programs, and other shelters to establish partnerships that expand the resources and referral options available to shelter clients. Maintain open lines of communication with all partner providers, and educate staff and clients about what partners are providing while encouraging participation.
  • Provide senior-level case management support by working directly with challenging clients, offering guidance to newer case managers, providing crisis management and debriefing, and troubleshooting and helping to solve issues that arise with clients or staff.
  • Support MSW practicum program by mentoring and supervising students, making sure they are completing their hours and addressing any concerns as soon as they arise.
  • Provide assistance with leadership for resource development, weekly meetings, policy, procedures and general support for the team
  • Serve on the leadership development team by participating in weekly meetings.
  • Support grant writers in obtaining funding by providing data and narrative.
  • Ensure shelter policies and procedures are accurate and up to date.
  • Create weekly role rotation schedules for shelter staff.
  • Adhere to UP policy, procedures and professional code of ethics.
  • Other Duties as assigned


Skills/Qualifications Required

  • Experience: 2-5+ years in social services
  • Education: Bachelor's degree with case management experience
  • Supervisory Experience: Required
  • Language Skills: Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus but not required
  • Customer Service: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to others
  • Independence: Ability to work independently and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Organization: Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Communication: Strong oral, listening, and interpersonal communication skills; effective and sensitive communication with all management levels
  • Conflict Resolution: Ability to cope with and de-escalate situations using de-escalation techniques
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with general office equipment (computer, telephone, printer, copier) and intermediate knowledge of Google products
  • Boundaries: Ability to set and model appropriate boundaries and maintain a calm demeanor in chaotic settings
  • Personal Traits: Highly motivated, resourceful, flexible, with a positive attitude and sense of humor
  • Empathy: Exhibits compassion and empathy; works well with diverse adults and children
