The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota is looking for a Staff Accountant to join our team! Working closely with the Director of Finance and the Development team, the Staff Accountant will assist with a broad range of financial, accounting, and organizational processes.

     

Job Summary:

The Staff Accountant, reporting to the Director of Finance, plays a critical role in maintaining the financial health of the ACLU-MN.  The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing timely and highly specialized accounting work required to accurately maintain the organization’s strategic goals by serving as the lead staff person responsible for the execution of the accounting functions in accordance with GAAP. This role has a substantial impact on both the day-to-day finance and long-term strategic direction providing financial analysis, short and long-term planning, and expertise to strengthen its financial position.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance

  • Compiles all accounts payables and receivables, recording transactions and accruals, and preparing payment of invoices.
  • Performs general ledger reconciliations, research variances, and makes corrections, as necessary.
  • Makes weekly bank deposits and completes monthly bank credit card reconciliations.       
  • Verifies all transactions comply with organization policies, approved budgeted expenses, and best practices.
  • Assist with quarterly and year-end closings,  annual audit preparation, 990 filing prep, and revenue reconciliations with the National ACLU.
  • Works with the Director of Finance to identify and articulate operational strategic issue priorities.     
  • Contributes to the strategic planning process and implementation of the plan.
  • Provide analytical support to ACLU-MN’s senior management team including the development of internal reporting capabilities and making recommendations on organizational fiscal decisions.
  • Ensure compliance, the integrity of information, and
  • strategic decision-making by analyzing various financial aspects including, but not limited to; expense reports, budgets and forecasting, internal controls, cost analysis, and financial statements.    
  • Assists the Director of Finance and other staff with other duties and projects as assigned.

Development

  • Responsible for fundraising and donation reconciliation with the Philanthropy department and and National ACLU which includes monthly and yearly reconciliation and processing credit card gifts.     
  • Provide the financial, accounting, and budgeting support needed for fundraising activities.

Administration      

  • Manages the processing of payroll, including calculation of wages, deductions, and benefits. 
  • Additionally, oversee the submission of retirement contributions.
  • Analyze benefit options and recommend cost-effective solutions that align with organizational needs.
  • Collaborate closely with Human Resources to ensure alignment in workforce planning and projections.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including maintaining focus and managing workflow in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Excel and Microsoft Office Suite. Financial accounting software Sage Intacct. Experience with Sales Force is a plus. Ability to master new software.
  • Prior experience applying knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical and strategic thinker.
  • This position will have access to highly confidential information and, therefore must demonstrate the ability to handle sensitive data with discretion and maintain strict confidentiality.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Accounting, and 10 years of related work experience.
  • Experience in non-profit accounting (501c3 and 501c4).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.      
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.
