Description

The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has a new position for a Regional Administrator to manage administrative staff to support the work of our Asheville, NC; Birmingham, AL; Charleston, SC; Nashville, TN; and Washington D.C. offices. This position can be based in any one of those SELC offices. This individual will join our administrative team and report to The Director of Administration. The Regional Administrator will co-supervise ten legal assistants, work closely with office directors on general office operations, and help onboard all staff in these offices. The ideal candidate will have previous legal support or policy experience and robust people management experience. This role requires someone who is a skillful communicator and has a demonstrated ability to build cooperative working relationships with a broad number of staff, as well as the ability to effectively engage with the details of our work and procedures.

SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Co-manage ten administrative staff members including legal and legislative assistants.
  • Provide ongoing training and guidance to staff, identify and relay operational challenges, facilitate regional coordination between offices, and ensure adequate legal support and administrative coverage.
  • Partner with office directors to manage administrative staff and serve as a resource on various operational procedures, including facilities related items.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across all departments and offices to encourage policy compliance and clarify procedures.
  • Support office administrators and office directors with budget responsibilities.
  • Act as hiring supervisor for administrative staff in these five offices, in concert with the Director of Administration and Human Resources; assists in coordination of onboarding plans for new staff.
  • Work with the Legal Practice Administrator to identify legal assistant training topics.
  • Assist the Director of Administration with special initiatives/projects related to technology, evolving procedures, and standardizing best practices throughout the region.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience including –
  • 2+ years of legal or policy experience, preferably in a law firm, environmental, or nonprofit space, or a willingness to learn in-depth about environmental law if no previous experience in this area.
  • 3+ years of people management experience, with a consistent track record of success managing and mentoring individuals in-person and remotely, including hiring and training staff.
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbally – a strong communicator with the ability to communicate diplomatically in difficult situations. Easily adjusts communication style based on work style and personality.
  • Budget management experience – demonstrated experience submitting expenses and invoices, developing budgets, and tracking spending.
  • Superb judgment – this regional role is crucial to gathering information on our operations in five of our offices and identifying regional opportunities for growth. This position will handle a high workload while remaining approachable to staff and making daily decisions on where best to invest their time. Ability to work independently but exercise excellent judgment on when to ask for further guidance from leadership.
  • Solutions-oriented – mentally flexible; finds creative solutions to challenges. Solicits input and feedback from staff to create a cohesive team culture of continuous improvement.
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to helping SELC create and foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. You engage in ongoing personal learning and are eager to contribute to our organizational efforts in this area.

  • Demonstrated environmental interest and experience in a personal or professional setting.
  • Litigation support experience.
