Position Summary

The Supportive Housing Specialist provides case management and housing assistance services to individuals who qualify for supportive housing in Montgomery County, MD. This is a hybrid position, with a combination of field work/ office work/ work from home remote duties. This position works with the Bethesda Cares team to implement Housing First practices on behalf of persons experiencing homelessness and is responsible for the following:

  • Implementation and oversight of landlord relationships, networking with landlords, and providing landlord mediation services;
  • Case Management of 10-14 clients with supportive visits to their apartments/ efficiency studio units.
  • Provides assistance and works with Bethesda Cares team to locate housing options for each client, perform housing-based education, and linkage to appropriate related community resources;
  • Provides client assessment to determine appropriate financial supports to increase income. The Supportive Housing Specialist works with clients to develop, implement and monitor an individualized opportunity plan, ensuring clients’ ability to retain housing and access options for behavior health supports or medical support when necessary.

Essential Functions

  1. Provide initial information and screening for potential participants. Interview eligible participants and assess appropriate level of financial support (including security deposit, rent or utility arrears, and/or moving cost assistance).
  2.  Assess tenancy problems such as late payments, damage or lease violations, income, and financial assistance needs.
  3. Work closely with case managers, street outreach staff, and shelter staff in Montgomery County, MD to ensure program participants are able to access permanent housing and rapidly exit homelessness.
  4. Prepare and maintain case management records, documentation, and up-to-date files of clients; provide statistical information for reports.
  5. Negotiate with landlords to educate property managment staff about the program.
