Background

Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) is an established and growing experiential education organization that uses sailing as a platform for teaching leadership and STEM to underserved NYC public school students. Through our dual mission, we develop academic success and leadership in NYC youth, and provide maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public schools to teach math, science, and leadership to students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides sailing lessons and a membership program. HRCS has locations in Chelsea and Inwood.

Reports to - Inwood Youth Program Director

Summary

We seek a full-time Program Coordinator to work on the Sail Academy team, who is a hands-on educator that can coordinate day-to-day programming, coach, teach, and solve educational and logistical problems to ensure that our classes are consistently providing strong social-emotional and STEM content. The ideal candidate can speak, read, and write in Spanish, has youth development experience, and enjoys teaching STEM and social-emotional concepts in a small class setting. Sailing proficiency is not required.

Responsibilities

Manage and instruct Middle School student programs, including: 

  • Lesson planning and curriculum implementation
  • Event coordination (trips, visits, special events)
  • Data collection (attendance, diagnostic tests, surveys, staff observation)
  • Manage inventory and purchase supplies/equipment
  • Photo/video collection and organization
  • In tandem with other staff, manage program promotion and recruitment 
  • Supervise volunteers and part-time staff assisting in program 
  • Provide staff and volunteers with briefing on their roles and responsibilities and consistent feedback on their performance 
  • Assist with management and instruction of other youth programs as needed 
  • Other administrative duties as required
  • Outreach with families and associates of the program
  • Support with recruitment

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or pursuing a degree
  • Youth development, counseling, or program development experience, preferably with students of diverse backgrounds
  • The ability and interest to directly engage with students
  • Familiarity with outcome measurement 
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Google suite 
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • No sailing/boating experience required, but an interest in these activities is helpful
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish is a plus!!

Compensation

  • $52,000 - $56,000 per year, commensurate with experience
