Position Summary
Evergreen seeks a full-time People and Culture Director to support the organization as it fights for an all-of-government mobilization to tackle the climate crisis. The People & Culture Director is pivotal in shaping and driving Evergreen’s people operations strategy, performance management, and organizational culture. The Director will work to create a supportive and inclusive remote work environment, driving strong employee relations and ensuring organizational effectiveness. The People & Culture Director will report to the Executive Director.
Primary responsibilities include Hiring, Onboarding, Performance Management, Organizational Culture-Building, Employee Engagement, Relations and Wellness, Compensation and Benefits, Training and Development, and HR Information Systems. The ideal candidate will have experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced remote environment, a deep commitment to equity, and intersectional, progressive policy-making.

Responsibilities and Tasks
Talent Management
- Oversee Hiring, Onboarding, and Performance Management supporting Evergreen’s strategic people goals.
- Develop a Learning & Development strategy and culture among staff; create, facilitate, and/or outsource employee training for staff retreats, organization-wide learning initiatives, or other occasions as needed.
- Develop and iterate innovative remote hiring, onboarding, and talent management processes rooted in best practices and racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Manage end-to-end talent acquisition process, including position definition, benchmarking, posting, interviewing, and reference checking of qualified job applicants, collaborating with department managers to understand skills and competencies required for hiring needs.
- Drive and enhance Evergreen’s performance management program, including annual goal-setting, monitoring, and performance evaluation processes that support a culture of equity, professional development, and growth.
- Ensure talent management furthers employee engagement, retention, and advancement while maintaining a high level of performance standards toward a culture of professional development; employees who demonstrate facility with our values and an ability to meet/exceed goals are retained and promoted throughout the organization.
Employee and Union Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations issues, providing guidance and resolution support.
- Foster positive relationships with union representatives and manage union-related matters, ensuring collaborative and effective negotiation, implementation, and compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
Compensation and Benefits
- Oversee the design and administration of our competitive compensation and benefits programs to attract and retain top talent, serving as the primary point of contact for employee benefits and compensation questions.
- Conduct regular reviews of compensation structures to ensure market competitiveness and internal equity.
- Manage benefits systems, implementation, and renewals, including conducting regular assessments of benefit offerings.
Administration & Compliance:
- Oversee compliance and employment law requirements in a fully remote office; manage and advise on equitable processes for employee relations and personnel issues; update and develop organization-wide human resources policies and processes as needed.
- Vet and manage HR vendors and systems. Current systems include Gusto (HRIS), ERI (compensation), and Lattice (Performance Management).
- Provide compliance guidance and administration related to local and federal labor laws.
Organizational Culture & Employee Engagement
- Lead the building of an organizational culture that is values- and purpose-driven, team-centered, inclusive, results-oriented, joyful, and fosters performance, productivity, positivity, and all-around collegiality.
- Help implement Evergreen’s diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and collaboratively develop programs to enhance Evergreen’s commitment to environmental justice throughout the organization.
- Conduct employee engagement feedback surveys and other employee relations mechanisms, turning staff feedback into tangible actions.
- Establish documents and practices to effectively center and maintain Evergreen’s values and impact-oriented culture.
- Review and iterate upon existing policies and processes that enhance Evergreen’s commitment to employee well-being.
- Plan and execute Evergreen retreats in collaboration with the People Operations & Leadership team.
Strategic Planning
- Be a key participant in developing the organization’s strategy and driving clarity and buy-in on short, medium, and long-term goals.
- Collaborate with the Leadership team and department leads to align processes, resource planning, and department goals with Evergreen’s strategies.
- In collaboration with the People and Operations team and Department leads, develop internal process improvements
- Advise leadership and managers on issues such as performance management, development, and employee relations.
First-Year Milestones
- In your first 90 days, you will have:
- Met all employees, leadership, and board, establishing relationships with key stakeholders and understanding Evergreen’s HR needs and priorities.
- Conducted a review of current HR policies and practices, identifying areas for improvement.
- In 6 months, you will have:
- Launched and overseen the 2024 year-end performance review cycle and begun preparing 2025 goals and mid-year review cycle.
- Implemented improvements to the talent management process (hiring, onboarding, performance management) and developed programs to support employee development.
- Strengthened employee relations and established effective communication channels with union representatives.
- Enhanced HR data management and reporting capabilities through the effective use of HR information systems.
- In 1 year, you will have:
- Successfully led key HR initiatives that have improved employee engagement, satisfaction, and well-being.
- Established yourself as a trusted leader in the organization, known for your ability to drive positive change and foster a supportive workplace culture.
- Developed and implemented strategies to attract, retain, and develop top talent in alignment with Evergreen’s mission and values.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Ability

- 7+ years of experience in human resources, with a focus on employee relations, talent development, and performance management.
- Experience in environmental justice, organizing, campaign, or multi-entity (c3/c4) organizations is a plus.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Experience managing compensation and benefits programs, including salary benchmarking, job leveling, and benefits administration.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build strong relationships with employees at all levels.
- Experience in labor and union relations, including negotiating and implementing union contracts.
- Interest-based bargaining experience is a plus.
- Experience developing and implementing training and development programs.
- Proficiency in HR information systems.
- Strong alignment with Evergreen's mission of defeating the climate crisis and building a just and thriving clean energy economy.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $156,000/year
