In 1817, the Crosswicks Library Company was officially incorporated to serve the needs of the Chesterfield community.
The Crosswicks Library has since evolved to serve a growing and diverse community of young families, children, retirees, hobbyists and lifelong learners. We are supported by generous donors, local businesses and grantors.
About the Position
Reporting to the Library Board, the Lead Librarian is dedicated to providing excellent customer service, innovative programming, representative collections, fiscal oversight, community engagement and outreach.
In addition, they support the vision and provide the day-to-day leadership in alignment with the Library’s mission. The Lead Librarian oversees library operations including other staff members, policies and the financial framework as established by the Board.

Preferred Education
● MLIS or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution.
Preferred Experience
● A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a public library.
● Demonstrated ability to manage library staff and library finances
● Knowledge of current library technology, trends, social media and innovations
● Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and productively with library staff, Board of Trustees, town government, and community
Critical Attributes
● Positive, pro-active attitude and ability to provide outstanding customer service.
● Ability to develop new programming that meets the community’s changing needs
● Ability to analyze the basic book needs of the library, apply approved book selection methods
● Ability to analyze, comprehend, and utilize approved public library standards and budgeting systems
● Ability to repetitively bend and lift up to 20 lbs.
Key Responsibilities
Programs and Services
Uses a community-led approach to ensure a high quality of relevant community programming is provided. Actively works to reduce barriers to access to library programs and services. Evaluates programs and services consistently using outcomes-based evaluation methods.
Community Outreach
Ensures a high profile ongoing public outreach efforts to build the library's profile and keep the community informed of the evolving role of the library and its importance to an engaged community.
Financial Responsibilities
Directs the financial administration of the Library in collaboration with the Board of Directors to ensure cost-effectiveness of services and operations. Seeks opportunities to apply for grant funding and donations to supplement and build on existing resources.
Administration
Advises the Board in development of a strategic plan and recommends policies consistent with these goals. Evaluates and maintains an organizational structure and oversees the deployment of resources to meet the Library’s goals and objectives for service to the community. Manages the Library to ensure efficiency of operation and continuous improvement. Leads library people operations by advising on effective hiring, assignment of duties, and performance management.
Reports To - Board Executive Committee
This is a fully in-person position.
Hours - Part Time - 20 hours per week
Compensation - This is a salaried, exempt position with a targeted compensation of $20/hr. The wage offer will be commensurate with skills and experience. Personal days and sick days are
also included.
Physical Requirements - Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer are normal. Incumbents must be able to lift or carry items weighing twenty (20) pounds and walk upstairs.
