Chief of Staff 

Reports to: CEO/Publisher 

The San Antonio Report, a nonprofit newsroom that serves Bexar County and surrounding areas is looking for a driven, detail-oriented chief of staff to report to the CEO on operational matters and strategic initiatives. As a key member of the executive team, you will have a problem-solving mindset, comfort with managing projects, and a get-it-done approach to our work — supporting our journalism as well as the business functions that make it possible. You will act as a stand-in for the CEO in certain meetings and take on special projects. Most importantly, this person is absolutely committed to the mission of the San Antonio Report: To provide journalism and civic engagement opportunities, enabling citizens and institutions to build a better city to live and work.

Key Responsibilities 

• Serve as an adviser, collaborator and thought partner to the CEO/Publisher and Editor in Chief and Managing Editor in defining long-term organizational strategies.
• Work with CEO and organizational leaders to implement priorities. 
• Support planning for the organization, including strategies for growth.
• Prepare budgets and forecasts, and in cooperation with external accountants, limited monthly financial reporting.
• Lead revenue producing functions (memberships, events, grants, advertising and major donors) overseeing a team of three direct reports and working closely with CEO/Publisher.
• Manage Human Resources functions of Hiring, onboarding, time-off procedures, job descriptions, benefit administration and communications. Primary liaison with PEO.
• Oversee projects or initiatives as directed by the CEO. 
• Manage the hiring process for the organization. Draft and post job descriptions, outline interview processes, and screen candidates. 
• Board management: with input from CEO and board chair, oversee preparation for board meetings. Create agendas and circulate materials in advance in accordance with organization bylaws. Collect and prepare data from across the organization, such as financial updates or program outcomes, to create presentations that lay out the information in a concise and clear format. Help onboard new board members, monitor term lengths, and support board initiatives. 
• Arrange meetings to support ongoing community and funder relationship building. 
• Pilot external partnerships for new earned revenue streams.

• Public Promotion: You are a natural networker and advocate representing the San Antonio Report when required at networking events in the community as well as within the journalism industry nationally.
• Industry expertise: An understanding of journalism and/or nonprofit news (or the ability to learn quickly).

Work Experience

• 5+ years’ experience managing operations at a nonprofit or similar organization
• Prior experience working with a board, supporting board operations, or serving on a board
• Prior experience managing budgets
• Prior experience with Salesforce and G-Suite

Salary & Benefits

The San Antonio Report seeks a wide range of candidates to consider for this exciting opportunity. The average salary for Chief of Staff in the San Antonio market is $108,000 and will be used as a guideline; however, salary will be determined based on experience and qualifications. The San Antonio Report offers generous PTO and competitive benefits.
