Job Summary

The Technician will interface with students, faculty, and staff within multiple makers spaces, including: the wood shop, metal shop, sculpture studio, and classrooms. The Technician should be a personable, proactive, and safety-minded individual who will become integral to the daily workings of the facilities. This is a fast-paced, dynamic environment dealing in both analog and digital mediums of art, design, and craft.

Essential Functions

  • Monitoring student safety while they are working in the wood shop, metal shop, and other spaces within the Design Arts Annex.
  • Providing technical fabrication support to students during Open Studio hours.
  • Assisting the Shop Manager in the maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Cleaning and organization of makers spaces and storage areas.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree, preferably within fine arts, design, fabrication/construction or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Minimum of 3 years of combined experience in woodworking, welding (MIG) and/or metal fabrication.
  • Ability to work safely with, and demonstrate proper use of, a wide array of hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
  • Ability to work four weekly shifts: two weekday evenings, Saturday day and Sunday day.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 4 years of woodworking experience.
  • 2 years pf experience in metal fabrication.
  • Experience assisting instructors and supervising students within an educational environment. 
  • Familiarity with CNC digital fabrication equipment and CAD software.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of faculty and students.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, stoop.

Additional Information

This position is classified as Non-exempt, grade F. Compensation for this grade ranges from $14.10 - $21.15 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
